Gastroenteritis is one of the most common reasons for veterinary consultation, which applies for both cats and dogs! Vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, depression, abdominal pain are symptoms that are mostly seen when these patients arrive at the clinic. Several causes can explain this condition: intestinal parasites, ingestion of a foreign body (obstructive or not), food intolerance, a virus, food poisoning, liver damage (hepatitis), pancreas damage(pancreatitis), etc. A complete physical examination is needed to properly evaluate the state of the animal and some tests such as stool analysis, X-rays, blood test, ultrasound may be recommended to allow the veterinarian to identify the cause (which unfortunately can sometimes remain unknown).
Treatment can range from medication to administer at home, hospitalization, surgery to remove the foreign body if needed, and/or injections to stop the nausea and diarrhea. Also, food easy to digest to calm the stomach and intestines can be added to the treatment!
Consult your veterinarian promptly if your animal has signs of gastroenteritis because the longer you wait, the longer your pet is suffering, and serious consequences may result.
Your pet’s health is our priority!
